
There were many different id tags in the history of VW. Each described a model, specifications like weights and even exchaust types.

In the beggining the id tags were really basic. They were placed near the brake fluid reservoir under the front hood of the bug.

In the years of 60-62 there came a transition of id tags. They became smaller and were mounted in other places. The Id tags went on the inside of the front hood on either side of the inside walls usually near the brake reservoir. Also the first 2nrs of the vin nr described the type. 3rd digit described the year of production in the given decade.

Type 2 splits 60-67 had the id tags mounted on the fresh air vent over head on the passanger side. Type 2 baywindows 68-79 the had their id tags behind the passenger seat on the dividing wall. Westfalias due to the lack of this wall had it at a slant just behind the passenger seat, facing the rear of the bus.
